WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Supreme Court [unanimously] ruled Thursday that companies cannot patent parts of naturally-occurring human genes, a decision with the potential to profoundly affect the emerging and lucrative medical and biotechnology industries.

"We hold that a naturally occurring DNA segment is a product of nature and not patent eligible merely because it has been isolated," Thomas said.

My Two Cents

Supreme Court makes unanimous sense -- throws out patents that are a mere isolation of naturally occurring DNA segment or a human gene. Three decades of encroachment in this area has finally been stemmed! Take that Myriad. Now let's get Monsanto kicked out on their GMO patents :).
