But Richard Stallman, founder of the Free Software Foundation and creator of the computer operating system GNU, said that cloud computing was simply a trap aimed at forcing more people to buy into locked, proprietary systems that would cost them more and more over time.
My Two Cents
One one hand Richard Stallman is right that cloud computing is a trap! It is a trap at higher prices and and cloud computing lock-in. On the other Richard Stallman's approach is dinosaur-like. The benefits of cloud computing and all the abilities to scale up and scale down in real time are enabling business opportunities never before possible in the world of entrepreneurship.
I get kick out of Stallman saying that he thinks the desktop can be the end-all and be-all. Buy your own desktop, store your information locally. That's still perfectly fine to do, but enabling users and businesses to get as many as 64+ CPU's / cores and 240 GB from a cloud operators like Profit Bricks for $150 per day. Hourly billing. So many benefits for small co's and even the big boys are going to love it soon. Prices will drop even more, so it won't be such a price trap. But nothing we can do about Stallman's reluctance to move his information off-site. He does have an obvious advantage of knowing how to secure his information better than all but a few thousand people on this planet.
