The United States is planning to give up its last remaining authority over the technical management of the Internet. The Commerce Department announced Friday that it will give the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), an international nonprofit group, control over the database of names and addresses that allows computers around the world to connect to each other.
My Two Cents
On Friday night I saw this story. No coincidence that this was announced around close of business on a Friday night. Nobody has the energy to get all blustery. The Administration took out the trash on a Friday night and nobody go to worked up. I guess mission accomplished by the Administration.
I am not sure what to think right now regarding the US Dept. of Commerce giving up management and oversight. Analysts all over the world are updating their Strategic Memorandum's regarding how and what to do regarding ICANN and its strategic choke points on DNS servers and open communications.
Part of me hopes that if we are giving up the right to manage that we aren't giving up much, but part of me see this as giving away an important strategic asset - and to what end and in exchange for what? This transition will be carefully monitored by many everywhere!
