Yahoo has acquired New York-based startup Wander. According to the blog post, Days will continue on as a standalone app, supported by all members of the Wander team. Plus, the five-person team will start working on “some exciting new projects” as a part of Yahoo’s Mobile and Emerging Products team, based in NYC.
My Two Cents
Marissa Mayer is my personal favorite CEO in the entire tech space. She takes her responsibility to be aggressive and "buy" talent and companies. $10 mm acquisitions don't even have to be reported to the SEC for a company Yahoo!'s size. But even a small $10 million acquisition is a life-changing event for so many entrepreneurs. With Yahoo's tiny cash and cash equivalents position (about $4B) compared to Apple (about $150B, Google (about $50B), MSFT (about $100B), even Facebook (about $10+B), all Yahoo! does is continue to buy people and technology. Is Tumblr going to be her YouTube? I hope so. I also hope that she views this as a viable long-term strategy. Historically, M&A acquisitions and their related integration's have not been a worthwhile strategy, but I hope Marissa and Yahoo! prove them wrong! All of us entrepreneurs should be rooting for Marissa's success in this regard!
